Learn it
A force is a push or a pull. Forces can make things start moving, stop, speed up, slow down, change direction or change shape.
Kicking a ball is a push. Opening a drawer is a pull. Forces have a size (strength) and a direction. Scientists measure force in units called newtons (N), using a tool called a force meter (spring scale).
π Amazing facts
- The unit ‘newton’ is named after the scientist Isaac Newton.
- An apple weighs about 1 newton on Earth.
π§ͺ Try it: Push or pull hunt
- Walk around your home and list 10 actions (opening a door, typing, zipping a coat).
- Write ‘push’ or ‘pull’ next to each.
- Circle any that use both.
- Pick one and draw arrows showing the force direction.
Think about it: Can a force change an object’s shape? Try squeezing a sponge.
