Thinking Like a Scientist

Learn it

Scientists answer questions using the scientific method:

  1. Ask a question (“Do plants grow faster with music?”).
  2. Research what is already known.
  3. Make a hypothesis: a testable prediction (“If…, then…”).
  4. Experiment to test it.
  5. Record and analyze data.
  6. Draw a conclusion and share it.

A hypothesis can be wrong, and that is fine! A surprising result teaches us something new.

πŸ”Ž Amazing facts

  • Many famous discoveries started with a surprising result.
  • Scientists share results so others can repeat and check them.

πŸ§ͺ Try it: Hypothesis practice

  1. Pick a question: ‘Which paper towel brand soaks up the most water?’
  2. Write a hypothesis using ‘If… then…’.
  3. List what you would need to test it.
  4. Share your plan with a grown-up.

Think about it: Why is it OK if a hypothesis turns out to be wrong?
